What I found when we looked closer
Santa Clara (7,553 residents) and Ivins (8,978) share one public safety department in the St. George metro, near the Arizona and Nevada borders. Ivins grew from 6,753 residents in 2010 to 8,978 in 2020. It is also home to the Tuacahn Center for the Arts, the largest professional outdoor theater in Utah, and resorts including Red Mountain and Black Desert.
One team covers two city councils, two sets of neighborhoods, and a steady flow of visitors.
Following one report through the building
The first thing we do with a new department is trace where a report goes after the officer hits submit. Here, it passes through 3 hands:
- 1Officer
- 2Sergeant
- 3Washington County attorney
Every one of those readers needs the same facts from the first draft. That is what shaped what we built.
What we built for them
Visitors to Tuacahn and the resorts leave within days. A source-linked draft captures their account on first contact.
What we're watching
These are the signals that will tell us whether it's working here:
- Same-shift report completion
- Visitor cases closed without a callback
- Reports per officer per shift
Figures on this page come from the department's own published materials. We only publish Code Four results after the department reviews them.
