What I found when we looked closer
The Salt Lake City Police Department serves Utah’s capital, covering 110.4 square miles and 200,591 residents with 567 sworn officers and 122 civilian staff. The department is organized into three bureaus (Field Operations, Investigative, and Administrative), each commanded by a deputy chief and divided into nine divisions.
That structure means a report written in Field Operations often becomes the starting document for an investigative division. Any gaps in the first narrative turn into follow-up work for detective AI tools.
Following one report through the building
The first thing we do with a new department is trace where a report goes after the officer hits submit. Here, it passes through 4 hands:
- 1Field Operations officer
- 2Sergeant
- 3Investigative Bureau
- 4District attorney
Every one of those readers needs the same facts from the first draft. That is what shaped what we built.
What we built for them
What we're watching
These are the signals that will tell us whether it's working here:
- Field reports accepted by investigations without a rewrite
- Detective time to locate key statements
- Time from call close to an approved report
Figures on this page come from the department's own published materials. We only publish Code Four results after the department reviews them.
