What I found when we looked closer
Maui County includes the islands of Maui, Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi, and Kahoʻolawe, and more than half of its 2,398 square miles is water. Maui Police Department, based in the county seat of Wailuku, serves 164,754 residents plus a steady stream of visitors.
You cannot drive between islands to follow up on a case, and many of the people involved are visitors who will leave before a second interview.
What their people told us
I've been getting only positive responses from those that use it. I'm using Code Four on all my new cases and some older ones. Love it!

Erik LosvarLieutenant · Maui Police DepartmentFollowing one report through the building
The first thing we do with a new department is trace where a report goes after the officer hits submit. Here, it passes through 4 hands:
- 1Patrol officer
- 2Sergeant
- 3Investigative Services
- 4Prosecuting attorney in Wailuku
Every one of those readers needs the same facts from the first draft. That is what shaped what we built.
What we built for them
Investigators can search footage and transcripts across islands instead of re-watching hours of video or waiting on files.
What we're watching
These are the signals that will tell us whether it's working here:
- Investigator time to locate key statements
- Visitor cases closed without a callback
- Time to assemble a case file
Figures on this page come from the department's own published materials. We only publish Code Four results after the department reviews them.
