What I found when we looked closer
Fairfield, founded in 1851, is the seat of Freestone County. Interstate 45 runs along the west side of the city, connecting Dallas and Houston, and US 84 and State Highway 75 cross downtown.
Interstate traffic brings calls well beyond what a town of 2,850 would generate on its own, and a small department writes every report.
Following one report through the building
The first thing we do with a new department is trace where a report goes after the officer hits submit. Here, it passes through 3 hands:
- 1Officer
- 2Chief or sergeant review
- 3Freestone County court
Every one of those readers needs the same facts from the first draft. That is what shaped what we built.
What we built for them
Travelers on I-45 rarely come back. A complete draft captures their account on first contact.
What we're watching
These are the signals that will tell us whether it's working here:
- Same-shift report completion
- Traveler cases closed without a callback
Figures on this page come from the department's own published materials. We only publish Code Four results after the department reviews them.
