What I found when we looked closer
Fremont County covers 1,534 square miles of central Colorado, with its seat in Cañon City. It is also home to 15 prisons, most state-run, plus the federal correctional complex at Florence, which includes ADX Florence, the only federal supermax in the country. About one in five people counted in the county live in those prisons.
That mix of long rural patrol distances, tourist traffic around Cañon City, and corrections-related work makes for a documentation load unlike most counties of its size.
Following one report through the building
The first thing we do with a new department is trace where a report goes after the officer hits submit. Here, it passes through 4 hands:
- 1Deputy
- 2Sergeant
- 3Investigations
- 4District attorney and corrections partners
Every one of those readers needs the same facts from the first draft. That is what shaped what we built.
What we built for them
What we're watching
These are the signals that will tell us whether it's working here:
- Turnaround on corrections-partner requests
- Same-shift report completion
- Investigator time to find key statements
Figures on this page come from the department's own published materials. We only publish Code Four results after the department reviews them.
